Before we begin, I have a special mention: the song American Honey by Lady Antebellum. The song in itself is so pure. If you've never heard it before after watching this movie you will surely want to play it over and over again. That is all.
In the movie the director deprives the viewers of all personal thoughts. You don't know what is true and what isn't. It may be quite frustrating. Especially for someone like me who enjoys knowing the true emotions of characters. You are forced to rely on just what each person says out loud. It is much like real life. Either you believe it when your mom says she has no money or you don't. Have I grown reliant of the godly powers that directors give to the viewers in order to provide more information and depth to the stories being told? A simple pair of "binoculars" can't seem to do the trick.
However. the director does not leave us hanging completely he provides various songs as fillers I'd say, whether you'd like to think of the lyrics as an extension to the movie or not they are there for a reason.
The characters leave you with a lot of vagueness. We've grown so dependent on the background stories but this movie sort of leaves you hanging with your own thoughts.
As we see in the movie the young disheveled Americans are facing a life of poverty. But throughout the movie they meet different people from different walks of life all providing more meaning to the movie. It forces you to see everything differently. Most of society think of teenagers in their situation simply as lost and/or dysfunctional solely based on their looks. The movie provides you with a different light. They are not like this by choice. They are a product of their circumstances.
There was one particular scene in the movie that caught my attention so much I began to reassess my perspective of the movie. A woman with a Jesus figure in the back of her car was approached by the leads, Star and Jake. At that moment, my first thought was whoa they are about to make some money. Boy was I wrong. That one hit deep. It might leave you feeling some type of way.
It was at that moment that I began to understand things and paid more attention to the smaller details. The amount of shame in that scene.
Is Jake in a relationship with the boss or were they ever an item? The answer is not very clear. What exactly is Jake up to? The "binoculars" that we are provided with follows Star closely. We know more of Star than any other character yet still we don't know as much as we think. We cannot hear her thoughts or know for sure her exact emotions.
When the movie ends it leaves you wanting more. But that's it, there is no more. I wanted the book. And honey, I checked. There is none to my knowledge. How would I rate this movie on a scale of 1-10? I can't. The scales of this movie are set so differently that I would not dare give it a rating. What I can tell you is that there is much more about the movie than what's written here. You will have to see for yourself and form your own opinions.
I guess you'd have to have watched it. In any case, in the title of this post you understood that this contained spoilers so if you read this without watching the movie shame on you. Lol, I am just kidding. The internet has no rules for things like that.
